Frequently asked question
Why are you running for the Kansas City Public Schools Board of Education?
I’m running to ensure KCPS remains a strong, community-centered school district where every student has the resources they need to succeed. My campaign is about building a community of shared investment in public education, increasing transparency, supporting teachers, and ensuring families are engaged in decision-making. I want to continue my lifelong commitment to education advocacy and policy-driven solutions that improve student outcomes.
What are your top priorities if elected?
My focus is on student success, teacher support and retention, community engagement, and fiscal responsibility. Students deserve equitable resources, strong special education services, and data-driven decision-making that prioritizes their needs. Teachers should have competitive compensation, professional development, and housing initiatives that make Kansas City the most attractive place to teach. Community engagement and transparency are key to rebuilding public trust, keeping families informed, and making sure district initiatives reflect the needs of students and residents. I will also ensure that bond projects are implemented efficiently, with local hiring and a commitment to universal design so that all students, including those with disabilities, have safe and accessible learning environments.
How will you support teachers and staff?
Supporting teachers means more than just salary increases. We have to address student loan burdens, provide housing incentives, and create strong professional development opportunities that keep educators growing in their field. I’ll advocate for teacher appreciation programs backed by the community and ensure that all teachers—regardless of how they obtained their certification—receive the resources and respect they deserve. The success of our students depends on the support we give to those who teach them.
How will you ensure KCPS is financially responsible and transparent?
Financial transparency startswith making sure every dollar is accounted for and used to directly improve student outcomes. I will push for clear reporting on bond projects so that taxpayers can see how funds are spent, while also advocating for local hiring to keep investment within our community. Budgets should be data-driven and focused on what benefits classrooms the most. Publicly accessible financial updates will help ensure that families, educators, and residents know where their money is going. I will also work to secure additional state and federal funding to reduce the financial burden on local taxpayers.
How will you engage the broader community, including those without children in KCPS?
Public education impacts everyone, not just families with school-age children. I want to make civic engagement a habit, notjust a campaign talking point. That means keeping the public informed about education policies, funding, and legislative changes that affect our schools. Iwill work to build stronger partnerships between KCPS and local businesses, universities, and community organizations to create opportunities that benefit students and teachers. Encouraging voter participation is also a priority—when more people are engaged in school board elections, we get better representation and stronger policies that reflect the needs of the entire community.
